What do I mean by “timeless artistry”?
I will start with artistry… Over the last several decades I have been involved in the visual arts. I have defined myself as an artist, a photographer, a designer, an arts -educator, -administrator and -developer. As I turned to the creation of my own business, I drew from my portfolio of photography and began making textiles using techniques that I have used to create digital imagery for my fine art. The work that I have come to enjoy the most starts with the art of others, whether I am shooting Renaissance stonework or Byzantine mosaic, or even the interior structure of a contemporary sculpture. The images I create from these photographs are given to my interpretation. I am not a trained textile designer, I am an artist who makes textiles. I will stay true to my vision whether I am creating a 12′ x 12′ installation or a pillow for a bed.
Timeless… When I draw on hundreds of years of source material and create a textile in my studio utilizing digital techniques… I describe that as timeless! The pillows are not targeted for a particular style or fashion but bring a sense of the past into the present. An honoring of the past allows a greater understanding of where we stand now and how we live with our past makes us who we are. We do not spring from the ground newly fashioned, we stand on a long history of exploration and contemplation. I don’t claim that my pillows are some sort philosophical culmination of the art of the ages, merely that they honor our history as artists, artisans and craftspeople. I see my work in the sleekest of contemporary spaces, in the most sumptuous of Palazzo inspired interiors… on a linen draped bed or a silk velvet upholstered settee… the materials are as traditional as cloth can be, the techniques as new as today’s innovation. Mixing, overlapping, culminating… creating… making all that is old, new again.
