I am often asked about inspiration and so am trying to pin down… what it really means, where it comes from and why it is important.

When we look at the great architectural monuments we often seek out the name of the architect, the person or organization that commissioned the structure and the use the building was meant for. For example, we know that in Florence the Duomo is the work of Renaissance master Brunelleschi, a choice supported by Cosimo di Medici (although the rest of the church was designed and worked on by many renowned architects and artists and is a gothic design.) As is common throughout Europe, the Roman Catholic Church commissioned and supported the work on the awe inspiring structure.

When we think of Florence who doesn’t envision that dome shape hovering over the city?   However, when we get close to or enter these masterpieces, we start to concentrate on the myriad nooks, the incredibly vast number of painted, frescoed, carved and inlaid surfaces.  Bas Relief, fresco, intarsia, mosiac; all manner of surface design and intricate ways to tell our stories… that is my inspiration.  While I am enthralled by the big picture, it is in the details created by the hands of hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of artists and artisans that capture my eye, my imagination …even my heart! I am astounded by the interweaving that creates a perfect balance.

Italy is a treasure trove of small details that enchant me over and over again.  I go back at every opportunity to look at the way the walls fit together, the way the light defines one edifice, the shadows another.  I am consumed by the carvings atop a column tucked away in some corner, the way the passage of millions of feet have worn a groove in this step, in that pavement covering the gravesite of a genius… Of course I have this experience in other corners of the world as well, any great city has a story to tell in its stones, glass and metals.  New York, a relative newcomer in the greater scheme of things, participates in this ornamental dialogue and there we may experience the melting pot of the worlds great traditions of artisanry.

So it is the thousands of hands that have created before me, the story of our humanity that inspires me… lifted from the great cities that collected artists and artisans to add to the visual lexicon.

When I am asked to show my work to a designer for a project they are working on, I know it is the overall work that will be remembered and their name that will be attached. I also know that my details will add a little spice to the story and touch back to the generations of artists and designers that have come before us.   It is the work of the masters that entice us and in the details, we may find our way in.
